The Mersea Island Society was formed over 40 years ago “to preserve, safeguard and promote the characteristics of Mersea Island for the benefit of all, to arrange open discussion whenever it appears necessary to obtain a consensus of public opinion, and to provide opportunities to gain factual knowledge from lectures, visits and discussion.”
Dates for your diary:
Tuesday 20th March
Mersea Museum 7:30pm
SEAFOOD SUPPER followed by a talk on the MERSEA BARROW AND WHEEL.

The Society publishes it's annual journal, the “Mistral”, providing a view of various aspects of life in Mersea both past and present and addressing issues of concern. Items of local interest for the “Mistral” are contributed by members and friends.
The Society organises lectures on a variety of topics by guest speakers, occasional coach tours to places of interest, and other social events throughout the year.
The Mersea Island Society Footpath Group organises regular walks both on and off the Island, details of which are published in advance in the Mersea Courier. It ensures the footpaths of Mersea are protected and remain in a usable condition.
The Society welcomes new members and encourages members to come forward for various roles on the Committee to enable it to undertake a wider range of activities. If you would like to join please ring Ian on 384206. The Committee meets on a monthly basis when it discusses issues of local interest and consults with representatives of other local groups.
The committee has been expanded to 12 members with the three new members given responsibility for reporting news on the decommissioning of the Bradwell power station. The full committee for 2009 now is:
